Medical Marijuana Doctor Inquiry

Medical Marijuana 35 Day Waiting Period

So you're sick, and you prefer to medicate with medical marijuana to ease your pain and symptoms. After all it is non-toxic and is well known to aid sleep, appetite, and mood, not to mention medical marijuana can ease pain and suffering of anxiety, pain, glaucoma, MS, wasting syndrome, nausea, and many other ailments.  So you visit your Dr. and he or she agrees that your ailment may benefit from the use of medical marijuana, AND that your sickness is on the list of "approved" ailments by the Colorado Department of Health.  So.. you send in your application to be listed as a medical marijuana patient with the State of Colorado and your Dr. recommendation along with the required fees to the State of Colorado Health Dept. Division of Medical Marijuana.  Do you think you're legal to use medical marijuana?  You're NOT!  It doesn't matter that your Dr. and you both agree that medical marijuana is a good option.  You must WAIT for the Colorado Dept. of Health to APPROVE your medical marijuana application.  But WAIT!  They are backlogged NINE MONTHS on medical marijuana applications!   Although it would seem that a decision about your health would be between you and your Dr.  and NOT involve the Government.  Well think again.  However the good news is you don't have to wait the entire NINE MONTHS!

Colorado medical marijuana patients need to remember that their medical marijuajna card or application is valid 35 days AFTER they send in their medical marijuana application to the Colorado Department of Health (we know it sucks that you have to wait considering this is a matter of health, however it could be much worse if the law required you to wait for your card to return in the mail).

IF you are currently an actively licensed medical marijuana patient in Colorado you should be sure to review your expiration date so you can reapply 35 days before the expiration date on your medical marijuana card, and not be caught in a 35 day waiting period of being unable to obtain your medical marijuana from a medical marijuana center if you wait until the final expiration date to reapply.  In other words always renew and reapply for your card at least 35 days before the expiration of your existing medical marijuana card.

Since the Colorado Dept. of Health is backlogged up to 9 months on processing medical marijuana ID cards, you are not considered legal for the first 35 days UNLESS by some miracle the Colorado Dept. of Health catches up with their back log of medical marijuana applications, and sends out your medical marijuana card within days.  Therefore it is important you carry the following on you at all times to prove you have applied to be a medical marijuana patient:

1. A copy of your medical marijuana application form.

2.  A copy of PROOF of mailing (certified mail receipt)

3.  Proof of payment (money order receipt)

If you are a medical marijuana patient who is growing your own marijuana plants, you should also keep a copy of all of the above items at your home, so if anyone wants to verify that you are a legitimate patient your family can show a copy of your medical marijuana papers if you are not home.

Change of Caregiver to Comply with New Law

There is some confusion in  the air regarding the new law changes effective August 1st, 2010.  In the past ONLY individuals could be caregivers.  What is a caregiver?  A caregiver is a person who grows your marijuana for you.  With the new law, dispensaries are now referred to as "medical marijuana centers."  Medical Marijuana Centers can now be listed as caregivers, whereas in the past only "individuals" could be listed as "caregivers" (not businesses).   In the past dispensaries had you list "an individual" that represented the dispensary as your caregiver.  With the new law, individuals (or caregivers) are limited to 5 patients, so you MUST UPDATE YOUR FORM to reflect the Medical Marijuana Center rather than the individual that represented the dispensary as your caregiver to comply with the new law changes.  Once again, the "medical marijuana center" must now be listed as your caregiver, instead of the individual that represented the dispensary in the past.  The new forms have clarified that you can grow your own plants PLUS list a medical marijuana center as your caregiver.   To comply with the law changes stop by and update your state form at Mile High Medical Cannabis located at 1705 North Federal Blvd., Denver, CO  80204   (directly across from Mile High Stadium - Invesco Field) on the corner of 17th and Federal Blvd. If you have questions please call us at (303) 455-9333.

Added to our existing selection this morning are some excellent strains of very high quality medical marijuana which are fresh in from curing, some of which have been proposed as cannabis cup contenders:  Big Budda Kush, Maui Hash Plant, Blue Widow Hash Plant, Blue Mist, Train Wreck, White Rhino, and Mango.

Seniors Support Marijuana

From choking on food, thoughts of suicide, pain from advanced stage multiple sclerosis, and inability to sleep, a retired nurse, living in a retirement community says "there are good people out there who need marijuana."  The retirement community created their own marijuana garden.  "Marijuana is the ONLY thing that helped me from constant pain says another resident of the retirement community."   The Seniors are ready for a fight!  For them marijuana means freedom from a life of pain, and freedom from addictive and lethal pain pills.

If Marijuana is so Great why is it Mostly ILLEGAL?

Why is marijuana illegal?  If you are old enough to vote, you MUST know the history if marijuana.  WHY?  Because in the very near future you will have the power to vote for a plant, and the very basic rights of people of the United States to use that plant.  A plant that has been abused.

Abused, not in the sense of abused by consumption.  But rather abused by the LIES, corruption, greed, racism, manipulation, and businesses who did not want competition, and used their deception to make and keep this plant illegal.

Marijuana is illegal because the Federal Government has spent billions of dollars over the last 75 years with anti-marijuana propaganda.  Why?  Because marijuana prohibition is a corporate conspiracy which now serves the law enforcement community.  In the past it served to keep out competition in several industries including the paper industry, and pharmaceuticals among others.  A complete waste of money.  It is a very easy bust which fuels the law enforcement money machine.  Marijuana use is a victimless crime.  A crime which is locking up millions annually, who are forced to pay tens of thousands of dollars in fines and legal fees for very small amounts of marijuana,  and fees to newly created "drug programs".  And millions of Americans have spent years of their lives behind bars in PRIVATE FOR PROFIT prisons.  WHAT?  yes!  Prisons for profit

For the last 75 years millions of Americans have smoked marijuana and not stood up to the unjust laws of the Federal Government until now.  Americans have had enough.  The truth is spreading rapidly across the internet and people are angry they have been lied to.  The Federal Government has turned its back on the American people and refused to listen to the TRUTH about marijuana.  Medical marijuana is now legal in 14 states.  And much evidence is coming out that marijuana actually has the ability to HEAL.  (no wonder it was in so many medications in the early 1900's)  Not only is marijuana used for nausea, pain, sleep, and to increase the appetite of a patient, but there is a growing body of evidence (despite attempts by the Federal Government to not reveal the information, and to not allow testing) that marijuana has reduced tumors, AND it not only reduces tumors but it also PROTECTS the surrounding tissue as it does.  (unlike chemo, or radiation therapy).    With 1 out of 2.3 American Men and 1 out of 2.8 American Women getting cancer sometime in their life this is a very remarkable benefit that as a voter you need to be aware of the next time you vote.  You could have access to a plant that is extremely effective and natural for healing yourself, and loved ones.  And more easily tolerated than man made drugs that attempt to mimic the plant.  We're NOT saying don't listen to your Doctor or avoid traditional treatments.  We're saying this plant has healing properties that you can greatly benefit from.  And NOT only when treating cancer.  Seizure disorders have had HUGE success as well as many other diseases and disorders.  There are thousands of patients who have greatly reduced the number of their man made prescriptions and chose marijuana, which to them offered a more effective treatment.  Some have been using it to treat autism in children, although controversial the parents of these children have risked a lot and swear by it.  Marijuana is non-toxic.  You can NOT overdose from marijuana.

As a Voter it is important for you to know that there are several drug companies that are coming out with drugs that TRY to mimic cannabis.  Sativex is one.  Marinol has already been released.  And there are more in the works.  More on the true Science of marijuana can be found on the "Strains" page near the bottom.   The thing to keep in mind is the pharmaceutical brands have not been successful at replicating the benefits of the plant, with acceptable side affects.  The plant contains many ingredients the lab has been unable to mimic, and the interaction of these chemicals may just be why marijuana "the plant" is most often preferred.   Most people who have tried Marinol , don't like it due to the psychoactive properties are too extreme, and the relief they were seeking was not effective.   So now the drug companies and big money are more involved again you can be sure there will be lots of misinformation to keep marijuana "the plant" illegal, or VERY tightly controlled.  So when you start seeing and hearing stories in the news that detract from this amazing healing plant keep in mind the real history of marijuana, and not the history you thought you knew.  Read on to find out more about the TRUE history of why marijuana is illegal.  I bet you thought it was to protect you.  Or you thought it was illegal because it is a gateway drug to very dangerous drugs.  BOTH of these statements are lies, and part of the propaganda spread over the last 75 or so years.

Many groups have secretly, and illegally been using marijuana for dozens of ailments with greater success and less side effects than pharmaceutical medications.  Yet the Federal Government continues to classify marijuana as a Class I drug (which means it has no medical purpose - plus the penalties are the most serious of any drug in the US).

How did this all come about?

In the beginning America’s first marijuana law was enacted at Jamestown Colony, Virginia in 1619. It was a law “ordering” all farmers to grow Indian hemp seed. There were several other “must grow” laws over the next 200 years (you could be jailed for not growing hemp during times of shortage in Virginia between 1763 and 1767), and during most of that time, hemp was legal tender (you could even pay your taxes with hemp!) Hemp was such a critical crop for a number of purposes (including essential war requirements – rope, etc.) that the government went out of its way to encourage growth.  The United States Census of 1850 counted 8,327 hemp “plantations” (minimum 2,000-acre farm) growing cannabis hemp for cloth, canvas,   and even the cordage used for baling cotton.

In the early 1900s, the western states developed significant tensions regarding the influx of Mexican-Americans. The revolution in Mexico in 1910 spilled over the border, with General Pershing’s army clashing with bandit Pancho Villa. Later in that decade, bad feelings developed between the small farmer and the large farms that used cheaper Mexican labor. Then, the depression came and increased tensions, as jobs and welfare resources became scarce.

One of the “differences” pointed out during this time was the fact that many Mexicans smoked marijuana and had brought the plant with them, and it was through this that California apparently passed the first state marijuana law, outlawing “preparations of hemp, or loco weed.”  Why?  Because the Mexicans were not welcome to the smaller farmers, and the use of marijuana was something that made them "different".   Since this was something new to the early settlers, they used this fact and exaggerated it to their benefit by fabricating stories about how the Mexicans and their use of marijuana made them crazy and made them hard to control, and capable of killing.  All the while thinking that if they could not have their marijuana they would go home.

One of the first state laws outlawing marijuana may have been influenced, not just by Mexicans using the drug, but, oddly enough, because of Mormons using it.  Mormons who traveled to Mexico in 1910 came back to Salt Lake City with marijuana. The church’s reaction to this may have contributed to the state’s marijuana law. (Note: the source for this speculation is from articles by Charles Whitebread, Professor of Law at USC Law School in a paper for the Virginia Law Review, and a speech to the California Judges Association

Other states quickly followed suit with marijuana prohibition laws, including Wyoming (1915), Texas (1919), Iowa (1923), Nevada (1923), Oregon (1923), Washington (1923), Arkansas (1923), and Nebraska (1927). These laws tended to be specifically targeted against the Mexican-American population.

When Montana outlawed marijuana in 1927, the Butte Montana Standard reported a legislator’s comment: “When some beet field peon takes a few traces of this stuff… he thinks he has just been elected president of Mexico, so he starts out to execute all his political enemies.” In Texas, a senator said on the floor of the Senate: “All Mexicans are crazy, and this stuff [marijuana] is what makes them crazy.”

In the eastern states, the “problem” was attributed to a combination of Latin Americans and black jazz musicians. Marijuana and jazz traveled from New Orleans to Chicago, and then to Harlem, where marijuana became an indispensable part of the music scene, even entering the language of the black hits of the time (Louis Armstrong’s “Muggles”, Cab Calloway’s “That Funny Reefer Man”, Fats Waller’s “Viper’s Drag”).

Again, racism was part of the charge against marijuana, as newspapers in 1934 editorialized: “Marihuana influences Negroes to look at white people in the eye, step on white men’s shadows and look at a white woman twice.”

Two other fear-tactic rumors started to spread: one, that Mexicans, Blacks and other foreigners were snaring white children with marijuana; and two, the story of the “assassins.” Early stories of Marco Polo had told of “hasheesh-eaters” or hashashin, from which derived the term “assassin.” In the original stories, these professional killers were given large doses of hashish and brought to the ruler’s garden (to give them a glimpse of the paradise that awaited them upon successful completion of their mission). Then, after the effects of the drug disappeared, the assassin would fulfill his ruler’s wishes with cool, calculating loyalty.

By the 1930s, the story had changed. Dr. A. E. Fossier wrote in the 1931 New Orleans Medical and Surgical Journal: “Under the influence of hashish those fanatics would madly rush at their enemies, and ruthlessly massacre every one within their grasp.” Within a very short time, marijuana started being linked to violent behavior.

During this time, the United States was also dealing with alcohol prohibition, which lasted from 1919 to 1933. Alcohol prohibition was extremely visible and debated at all levels, while drug laws were passed without the general public’s knowledge. National alcohol prohibition happened through the mechanism of an amendment to the constitution.

Earlier (1914), the Harrison Act was passed, which provided federal tax penalties for opiates and cocaine.

The federal approach is important. It was considered at the time that the federal government did not have the constitutional power to outlaw alcohol or drugs. It is because of this that alcohol prohibition required a constitutional amendment.

At that time in our country’s history, the judiciary regularly placed the tenth amendment in the path of congressional regulation of “local” affairs, and direct regulation of medical practice was considered beyond congressional power under the commerce clause (since then, both provisions have been weakened so far as to have almost no meaning).

Since drugs could not be outlawed at the federal level, the decision was made to use federal taxes as a way around the restriction. In the Harrison Act, legal uses of opiates and cocaine were taxed (supposedly as a revenue need by the federal government, which is the only way it would hold up in the courts), and those who didn’t follow the law found themselves in trouble with the treasury department.

In 1930, a new division in the Treasury Department was established — the Federal Bureau of Narcotics — and Harry J. Anslinger was named director. This, if anything, marked the beginning of the all-out war against marijuana.

WHO is Harry Anslinger?

Anslinger was an extremely ambitious man, and he recognized the Bureau of Narcotics as an amazing career opportunity — a new government agency with the opportunity to define both the problem and the solution. He immediately realized that opiates and cocaine wouldn’t be enough to help build his agency, so he latched on to marijuana and started to work on making it illegal at the federal level.

Anslinger immediately drew upon the themes of racism and violence to draw national attention to the problem he wanted to create. He also promoted and frequently read from “Gore Files” — wild reefer-madness-style exploitation tales of ax murderers on marijuana and sex and… Negroes. Here are some quotes that have been widely attributed to Anslinger and his Gore Files:

“There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos, and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz, and swing, result from marijuana use. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers, and any others.”

“…the primary reason to outlaw marijuana is its effect on the degenerate races.”

“Marijuana is an addictive drug which produces in its users insanity, criminality, and death.”

“Reefer makes darkies think they’re as good as white men.”

“Marihuana leads to pacifism and communist brainwashing”

“You smoke a joint and you’re likely to kill your brother.”

“Marijuana is the most violence-causing drug in the history of mankind.”

And he loved to pull out his own version of the “assassin” definition:

“In the year 1090, there was founded in Persia the religious and military order of the Assassins, whose history is one of cruelty, barbarity, and murder, and for good reason: the members were confirmed users of hashish, or marihuana, and it is from the Arabs’ ‘hashashin’ that we have the English word ‘assassin.’”

WOW!!  You say?   Me too!  I can't believe what I'm reading?  I couldn't either.  But hold on...... it gets better....

Harry Anslinger got some additional help from William Randolf Hearst, owner of a huge chain of newspapers. Hearst had lots of reasons to help. First, he hated Mexicans. Second, he had invested heavily in the timber industry to support his newspaper chain and didn’t want to see the development of hemp paper in competition. Third, he had lost 800,000 acres of timberland to Pancho Villa, so he hated Mexicans. Fourth, telling lurid lies about Mexicans (and the devil marijuana weed causing violence) sold more newspapers, making him rich.

Some samples from the San Francisco Examiner:

“Marihuana makes fiends of boys in thirty days — Hashish goads users to bloodlust.”

“By the tons it is coming into this country — the deadly, dreadful poison that racks and tears not only the body, but the very heart and soul of every human being who once becomes a slave to it in any of its cruel and devastating forms…. Marihuana is a short cut to the insane asylum. Smoke marihuana cigarettes for a month and what was once your brain will be nothing but a storehouse of horrid specters. Hasheesh makes a murderer who kills for the love of killing out of the mildest mannered man who ever laughed at the idea that any habit could ever get him….”

And other nationwide columns…

“Users of marijuana become STIMULATED as they inhale the drug and are LIKELY TO DO ANYTHING. Most crimes of violence in this section, especially in country districts are laid to users of that drug.”

“Was it marijuana, the new Mexican drug, that nerved the murderous arm of Clara Phillips when she hammered out her victim’s life in Los Angeles?… THREE-FOURTHS OF THE CRIMES of violence in this country today are committed by DOPE SLAVES — that is a matter of cold record.”

Hearst and Anslinger were then supported by Dupont chemical company and various pharmaceutical companies in the effort to outlaw cannabis. Dupont had patented nylon, and wanted hemp removed as competition. The pharmaceutical companies could neither identify nor standardize cannabis dosages, and besides, with cannabis, folks could grow their own medicine and not have to purchase it from large companies.

This all set the stage for…

The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937.

After two years of secret planning, Anslinger brought his plan to Congress — complete with a scrapbook full of sensational Hearst editorials, stories of ax murderers who had supposedly smoked marijuana, and racial slurs.

It was a remarkably short set of hearings.

The one fly in Anslinger’s ointment was the appearance by Dr. William C. Woodward, Legislative Council of the American Medical Association.

Woodward started by slamming Harry Anslinger and the Bureau of Narcotics for distorting earlier AMA statements that had nothing to do with marijuana and making them appear to be AMA endorsement for Anslinger’s view.

He also reproached the legislature and the Bureau for using the term marijuana in the legislation and not publicizing it as a bill about cannabis or hemp. At this point, marijuana (or marihuana) was a sensationalist word used to refer to Mexicans smoking a drug and had not been connected in most people’s minds to the existing cannabis/hemp plant. Thus, many who had legitimate reasons to oppose the bill weren’t even aware of it.

Woodward went on to state that the AMA was opposed to the legislation and further questioned the approach of the hearings, coming close to outright accusation of misconduct by Anslinger and the committee:

“That there is a certain amount of narcotic addiction of an objectionable character no one will deny. The newspapers have called attention to it so prominently that there must be some grounds for [their] statements [even Woodward was partially taken in by Hearst's propaganda]. It has surprised me, however, that the facts on which these statements have been based have not been brought before this committee by competent primary evidence. We are referred to newspaper publications concerning the prevalence of marihuana addiction. We are told that the use of marihuana causes crime.

But yet no one has been produced from the Bureau of Prisons to show the number of prisoners who have been found addicted to the marihuana habit. An informed inquiry shows that the Bureau of Prisons has no evidence on that point.

You have been told that school children are great users of marihuana cigarettes. No one has been summoned from the Children’s Bureau to show the nature and extent of the habit, among children.

Inquiry of the Children’s Bureau shows that they have had no occasion to investigate it and know nothing particularly of it.

Inquiry of the Office of Education— and they certainly should know something of the prevalence of the habit among the school children of the country, if there is a prevalent habit— indicates that they have had no occasion to investigate and know nothing of it.

Moreover, there is in the Treasury Department itself, the Public Health Service, with its Division of Mental Hygiene. The Division of Mental Hygiene was, in the first place, the Division of Narcotics. It was converted into the Division of Mental Hygiene, I think, about 1930. That particular Bureau has control at the present time of the narcotics farms that were created about 1929 or 1930 and came into operation a few years later. No one has been summoned from that Bureau to give evidence on that point.

Informal inquiry by me indicates that they have had no record of any marihuana of Cannabis addicts who have ever been committed to those farms.

The bureau of Public Health Service has also a division of pharmacology. If you desire evidence as to the pharmacology of Cannabis, that obviously is the place where you can get direct and primary evidence, rather than the indirect hearsay evidence.”

Committee members then proceeded to attack Dr. Woodward, questioning his motives in opposing the legislation. Even the Chairman joined in:

The Chairman: If you want to advise us on legislation, you ought to come here with some constructive proposals, rather than criticism, rather than trying to throw obstacles in the way of something that the Federal Government is trying to do. It has not only an unselfish motive in this, but they have a serious responsibility.

Dr. Woodward: We cannot understand yet, Mr. Chairman, why this bill should have been prepared in secret for 2 years without any intimation, even, to the profession, that it was being prepared.

After some further bantering…

The Chairman: I would like to read a quotation from a recent editorial in the Washington Times:

The marihuana cigarette is one of the most insidious of all forms of dope, largely because of the failure of the public to understand its fatal qualities.

The Nation is almost defenseless against it, having no Federal laws to cope with it and virtually no organized campaign for combating it.

The result is tragic.

School children are the prey of peddlers who infest school neighborhoods.

High school boys and girls buy the destructive weed without knowledge of its capacity of harm, and conscienceless dealers sell it with impunity.

This is a national problem, and it must have national attention.

The fatal marihuana cigarette must be recognized as a deadly drug, and American children must be protected against it.

That is a pretty severe indictment. They say it is a national question and that it requires effective legislation. Of course, in a general way, you have responded to all of these statements; but that indicates very clearly that it is an evil of such magnitude that it is recognized by the press of the country as such.

And that was basically it. Yellow journalism won over medical science.

The committee passed the legislation on. And on the floor of the house, the entire discussion was:

Member from upstate New York: “Mr. Speaker, what is this bill about?”

Speaker Rayburn: “I don’t know. It has something to do with a thing called marihuana. I think it’s a narcotic of some kind.”

“Mr. Speaker, does the American Medical Association support this bill?”

Member on the committee jumps up and says: “Their Doctor Wentworth[sic] came down here. They support this bill 100 percent.”

And on the basis of that lie, on August 2, 1937, marijuana became illegal at the federal level.

The entire coverage in the New York Times: “President Roosevelt signed today a bill to curb traffic in the narcotic, marihuana, through heavy taxes on transactions.”

Anslinger as precursor to the Drug Czars

Anslinger was essentially the first Drug Czar. Even though the term didn’t exist until William Bennett’s position as director of the White House Office of National Drug Policy, Anslinger acted in a similar fashion. In fact, there are some amazing parallels between Anslinger and the current Drug Czar John Walters. Both had kind of a carte blanche to go around demonizing drugs and drug users. Both had resources and a large public podium for their voice to be heard and to promote their personal agenda. Both lied constantly, often when it was unnecessary. Both were racists. Both had the ear of lawmakers, and both realized that they could persuade legislators and others based on lies, particularly if they could co-opt the media into squelching or downplaying any opposition views.

Anslinger even had the ability to circumvent the First Amendment. He banned the Canadian movie “Drug Addict,” a 1946 documentary that realistically depicted the drug addicts and law enforcement efforts. He even tried to get Canada to ban the movie in their own country, or failing that, to prevent U.S. citizens from seeing the movie in Canada. Canada refused. ( Drug Czar John Walters is trying to bully Canada into keeping harsh marijuana laws.)

Anslinger had 37 years to solidify the propaganda and stifle opposition. The lies continued the entire time (although the stories would adjust — the 21 year old Florida boy who killed his family of five got younger each time he told it).

So to sum it up..... WHY is Marijuana illegal?  Because the many Americans have been brainwashed by the Federal Government, and don't realize the benefits and uses that they and loved ones have lost due to the prohibition of marijuana.

Here we are in 2010, and 1 in 1.3 men will get cancer during their lifetime.  1 in 1.8 women will get cancer in their lifetime.  Marijuana has been shown to reduce tumors, stop seizures, ease pain, increase appetite, heal skin lesions, ease nasuea, induce sleep, increase quality of life, stop pain, reduce swelling, and is a very significant option for those who suffer from alcoholism, or drug dependence, especially those who have found themselves addicted to pain pills.

It is time for the American people to STOP the NONSENSE, get ACTIVE, and VOTE for the legalization of marijuana.

Jack Herer  (June 18, 1939 – April 15, 2010) passed away today.  Jack was a hardworking marijuana activist, published Author of two books "The Emperor Wears No Clothes" and "Grass", a Public Speaker, and a man who had a strain of marijuana named after him "Jack Herer".  He's been featured in High Times magazine and graced their cover on several occasions.   As if that wasn't enough he also ran for President of the U.S. twice, once in  1988, and again in 1992.  Jack died at age 70 from complications of a heart attack he had approximately 7 months earlier.  He is survived by his wife Jeannie who was often by his side in his endeavors.

This is a pretty cool quote from Jordan Westfall regarding Jack

"He aint dead.  He just became a God.  He'll still be there.  Just not as a mortal. Sitting next to jesus hitting a blunt bigger than his head looking at Buddah saying "see dude my shit is better than yours" and Morrison laughing his head off. While Garcia is asking "so.... when are we all going back for this apocalypse thing?"

RIP Jack Herer

Sativa, Indica, and Ruderalis Differences

When you visit a medical marijuana dispensary the budtender will typically ask if you prefer an indica, sativa, or hybrid.  This question is referring to the different species of marijuana.  Beyond the species are different strains of marijuana which you can find more information on a large variety of marijuana strains by visiting our "Meds" page.

An indica species is often associated with the terms "couch lock", and "buzzed", and considered a medication felt more on the body.  Meaning it puts the patient  into a very relaxed, sedated state, and will often aid with sleep.  Many patients prefer indica strains at the end of the day, as indica often results in an increased appetite, and the ability to relax and unwind, and to also aid with anxiety, and sleep.  An indica strain of marijuana is considered to be more felt on the overall body. Everyone is different however, and of course it depends on the specific indica strain as to the amount of THC and CBD in the strain.  There are patients who prefer indica strains throughout the day to aid them with high levels of anxiety, and can function normally.  There are other patients who only prefer indica at the end of the day.

A sativa species is often described as a "giggly heady" medication that is considered more of a "heady" medication.   Meaning it tends to uplift your mood and send your mind into a thought provoking  mode, and also sometimes increasing the level of communication.  Sativa is often preferred by patients who are looking for an uplifting thought provoking medication.  Some patients claim sativa strains give them energy and help them focus.  Artists and musicians have often claimed that marijuana enhanced their creative energy, and the species that would likely aid in this circumstance would be the sativa strain.  Many patients prefer sativa during the day.

As with many medications there are patients who claim the opposite affects.  For instance that on a sativa tend they to become very relaxed and experience the "couch lock" description that is often associated with indica, and that they tend to be focused and energetic on an indica strain.  Just like with other medications, the affect depends on the person.  Some drugs such as Benadryl will knock some people out, and yet make other people hyper.

Today, most marijuana is a combination of a sativa and indica species and is referred to as a "hybrid".  You can always visit our "meds" page to find out more information on hybrids and the percentage of indica and sativa.

There is another specifies of marijuana that is not readily available called the "ruderalis" species.  Ruderalis is not typically found in the medical marijuana industry as the THC level is found to be lower.  Ruderalis has been crossed with sativa and indica however will result in lower THC.

Below is more information on each species of marijuana.

Cannabis Sativa: Cannabis Sativa is a marijuana variety that likely originated in the Himalayan lowlands. The Sativa species is the tallest of the three cannabis species with outdoor plants reaching a height of 20 to 25 feet in height. Sativa is also less bushy than indica and can be grown closer together. Due to the height of this species, sativa has been utilized for its longer fibers since man began to cultivate it. Sativa is now cultivated all around the world.

Cannabis VarietiesTHC from the sativa plant is generally lower when compared to the indica species while CBD is higher. This results in a sativa that produces a heady or more energetic high. The yield of the sativa plant is less than that of the indica plant. This is mostly due to the tall and spindly nature of the Cannabis Sativa species. Sativa also takes more time to mature and is best suited for growing outdoors.

Many strains of sativa have been developed for indoor growing as well as having been combined with indica strains in order to create new strains with more desired characteristics such as a greater yield and bushier plants.

Cannabis Indica: Cannabis Indica is a marijuana variety that likely originated in the Himalayan highlands. Indica is the bushiest of the three marijuana species and is in the middle of the three cannabis species when it comes to height. Plants grown outdoors will rarely exceed ten feet in height.

The increased THC and decreased CBD in the indica species results in a much heavier stone that has more of a body high when compared to sativa. The yield of indica is greater than the sativa plant and it takes less time reach maturity.

Cannabis Ruderalis: First discovered in Eastern Europe (central Russia) by Russian botanist D.E. Janichevsky, this very short cannabis variety is known for its ability to grow in colder, harsher climates and its ability to switch from vegetative growth to flowering once it has grown 5 to 7 sets of leaves. What this means is that this plant can flower regardless of a change in light due to a shorter day.

This plant grows only 24 inches tall at most. Certain breeders have created new cannabis varieties crossing ruderalis with indica and sativa in order to create a heavy budding plant that will grow in harsher conditions. Cannabis varieties crossed with ruderalis result in a lower THC count, however, the plants are shorter and mature quicker.

Nederland Decriminalizes Marijuana

Nederland, Colorado became the third Colorado town to legalize marijuana, following Denver's lead in 2005, and Breckenridge in 2009.  Voters in the town approved a ballot measure that removed all local penalties for private adult possession.   More than 54% of voters supported the measure in what the town clerk said was a high voter turnout.

Voters also ousted incumbent Mayor Martin Cheshes, who had vocally oppossed the measure and referred to it as "foolish".

Durango voters largely supported a statewide initiative to legalize marijuana in 2006 - and they will likely vote on a similar local legalization initiative this November.

Nederland may be small, however their decision to oust their Mayor has to make you wonder if this is just the beginning of a trend that voters are likely to display as more and more people are getting sick and tired of their elected officials failing to listen to them, especially regarding marijuana reform and the wasted dollars spent, and lives ruined by victimless crime.  It appears marijuana advocates are turning out for elections in higher numbers and making a difference.

Vaporizing Marijuana

So you want to learn about vaporizing marijuana?  How does it work?  Why would I vaporize?  There are several reasons people choose to vaporize, but first let's explain how a vaporizer works.  Vaporizers gently heat the plant material to release the marijuana's active ingredients - THC and CBN.  When heated to the IDEAL temperature range of 356 - 392 degrees Fahrenheit, the plant releases the THC and CBN without burning the plant and creating smoke, but rather creates a thin mist or vapor that is ready to be inhaled.  392 degrees F is the boiling point of THC.  Higher temperatures are achieved by burning marijuana such as smoking a joint, which destroys some of the THC.  This is why vaporizing is more potent.  Many marijuana smokers will set their vaporizer to "420" degrees F, however this is not the ideal temperature.   Generally marijuana tastes better (depending on your taste) sometimes it takes getting used to.  It is easier on the lungs, less harsh on the throat, and a little bit goes a long way.  Smoking marijuana with a flame can generate temperatures of over 1200 degrees, so you are inhaling a bunch of stuff you don't need to be inhaling, like the leaves of the plant and a lot more carcinogenic toxins.  When vaporizing, you are mostly releasing only the active elements you want.  The plant material when done is browned.  Vaporizing is a much healthier choice than smoking as you get very minimal tar, or other "in-active" ingredients.  Marijuana has hundreds of different ingredients which have no effect.  There is no reason to be inhaling these.  Vapor is not smoke.  Cannabis vapor is more potent than smoke.  Many say that vaporizers give a different effect then traditional smoking, a more clear, healthy pronounced effect. Some of the BETTER vaporizers are pictured.

The Volcano Vaporizer is considered one of the better vaporizers.  The cost is around $500.

There are a couple of Different Types of Heating Methods

Direct/Conduction Heating:  The classic glass dome type vaporizer, which works by placing your ground herb on a small metal plate which then heats up to the desired temperature.  (when grinding the herb make sure it is in small chunks, not ground to a powder)  The reason this is called direct hearing is because the herb is placed "directly" on the heating element.  This method is not as desirable, since the herb touches the heating element, it can burn and produce a gross "burnt popcorn" like taste.  This method is not as efficient also, sometimes not vaporizing the herb completely.  This style of vaporizer has been in use since the 1970's.

Indirect/Convectional Heating:  This is the superior method for vaporizing herb.  Your marijuana will never directly touch the heating element, instead, direct hot air is passed over it releasing the good stuff.  Since it heats evenly, you stand a much greater chance of completely vaporizing your marijuana, increasing the efficiency and effect.   It is advisable to look for a ceramic heating plate, rather than metal, as the metal seems to put of by-products and smells like a soldering iron.

Vapor Delivery Systems

Stored Vapor:  Using this method of delivery, the vaporizer creates the vapor, then stores it in a glass dome or balloon style bag for consumption when ready.  The glass doe types don't provide the volume to store a "big hit".  The bag type however is able to accommodate large amounts of vapor, packing a nice punch!

Pictured above is the Arizer V-Tower Extreme, which includes a remote control.  The heating element is ceramic.  It comes with the bag, and food/medical grade plastic whip with detachable mouthpieces.  Wherever possible the strongest high quality glass is used.  Glass is inert - toxin free.  Some other vaporizers use metal, wood, plastics and teflon.  (although the outside is metal this does not come in contact with the heating element, and is insulated with non-toxic material).  The V-Tower Extreme vaporizer runs approximately $300.

Direct Lung Delivery: When you inhale from this type of vaporizer, the hot air passes through the herb, sending the vapor directly into your lungs.  This method allows for much larger hits because you don't need to store the vapor, limiting the size of the hit.  The more you inhale, the more you take in (provided there is marijuana left to vaporize).  Another positive is the clean, fresh tasting vapor.  Some models have a built in fan to get a higher volume of air moving into your lungs.

Marijuana is not the only herb you can inhale from a vaporizer.  You can use dried herbs from a garden or purchase them from homeopathic stores, an herbalist or online stores. Sage is used to help people suffering from insomnia. Eucalyptus clears the sinuses.  Jasmine and lemon offers a pick-me-up of energy and mood. Lavender and chamomile is  good to reduce stress and relax. Rosemary and sandalwood help fight depressive feelings. These are just a few common herbs used with vaporizers.  An herbal expert can help you create a blend that may be ideal for specific conditions such as a Ylang Ylang, sandalwood, lavender and rosemary blend that reduces stress and helps with depressive moods.

Why not vaporize?  Some vaporizers take as long as 9 minutes to heat up.  Vaporizers can be expensive. (however there are cost savings as you don't need to use as much herb to medicate since it is more potent).   Vaporizers are not as covert.  Vaporizers are not typically as portable.  Although there are portable vaporizers they are often the longest in terms of time to  heat up.

Vaporizers range in price from $50 for portable hand held pipe looking vaporizers to over $500 for the larger clunkier models.

The iolite vaporizer is a portable (it can fit in your pocket), and runs off butane (which is in a separate chamber).  We haven't tried this vaporizer yet, however have heard good things, therefore it is our present choice for portable vaporizers. The manufacturer of the iolite has been producing butane products in Ireland for decades plus it has a 2 year warranty.  It may take a little longer to heat up, but that is a trade off for the portability.  We're told typically 7-9 minutes.

If you use a marijuana vaporizer please feel free to comment on the brand you use and your likes and dislikes!

Colorado Cannabis Convention Experience

Happy Easter!  It's not only Easter, but also the day after the Colorado Cannabis Convention, where people from all over the World experienced cannabis cooking, viewed hemp wedding gowns, spoke with activists, attended classes on legal rights and responsibilities, listened to lawmakers, compared a wide array of pipes, bubblers, vaporizers, had a Dr. exam to obtain a medical marijuana recommendation, became a guest on marijuana radio, learned to grow marijuana, or bought a T-shirt!  There were also vendors who supply services and products to the Dispensaries, such as alarm companies, lawyers, marijuana edibles manufacturers, safe and security companies, insurance companies, printers, artists, web designers, and glass makers.  Not to mention the note comparing on marijuana growing, harvesting techniques, and various new marijuana growing products.

The convention was a fun and information packed place to learn, compare notes, and view new products.   We had the pleasure of educating some of the attendees, and debating  the proposed medical marijuana legislation, and made many new friends along the way.

The surprisingly large turnout of both Vendors and Attendees on an  Easter weekend is an indication that the medical marijuana movement has not only rooted itself, but has created many many jobs.  Regardless of your stand on marijuana you have to be thankful for that.

So on this Easter Sunday we'd like to thank Mother Earth, and the Colorado Cannabis Convention,  for feeding our brains with all the new information we received, and sending many new friends our way!

Colorado Medical Marijuana Applications Could Be Shredded!

The Colorado Department of Public Health has been inundated with applications for Medical Marijuana ID cards.  In fact they are getting up to 1,000 applications DAILY!   Effective April 1, 2010 there are some changes taking place.  They REALLY want to receive new applications via mail.  In fact if you do hand deliver your application it MUST be in a SEALED envelope, and will NOT be processed with the mail that arrives that day.  (in other words it won't speed up the process if you hand deliver it).  They REALLY want it in an envelope!   And NO they do not have envelopes for you.  The next sentence is directly from the horses mouth...    If it is delivered without an envelope it can be "handed back to the applicant or SHREDDED!"   YIKES!

OK.  OK.  We understand.  Mail it.  Get a receipt for mailing it - such as certified mail, or registered mail, or fedex signature required etc.   (because they are overwhelmed and MAY lose it - Plus you need that proof of mailing in your possession along with your application to be "legal" ).

Your license, or denial letter may take 6 months to arrive.  Although they are receiving approximately $90,000 daily in revenue, they apparently haven't hired anyone to  help process the applications.   Below is the notice from the Dept. of Health.

Medical Marijuana Registry Procedures for Drop-off Applications to Change

DENVER -- The Medical Marijuana Registry at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is making changes in processing applications at its Vital Records Office at 4300 Cherry Creek Drive South in Denver. Effective April 1, the walk-up window at the Vital Records Office will accept medical marijuana applications only in sealed envelopes and will not provide receipts or review applications for completeness at the time they are dropped off.

The changes are necessary due to the explosive growth in the number of medical marijuana applications during the past six months. The number of medical marijuana registry applications increased from approximately 270 per workday in August 2009 to approximately 1,000 per workday in February 2010. Most of these applications continue to be received by mail. This has led to a significant backlog, with increasing lag times between the date of application and the date when a registration card actually reaches the applicant. The turnaround time for applications now is approaching six months.

Currently, walk-in applicants for the medical marijuana registry have their applications reviewed for completeness by Vital Records staff. The result is that walk-in applicants are having their applications reviewed ahead of mail-in applications that continue to flow into the Vital Records office each day. The change in walk-in application processing will permit staff to focus on reducing the backlog of applications being received by mail.

"The new processing procedures are the best means we have available for serving all medical marijuana registry applicants," said Bob O'Doherty, director of the Center for Health and Environmental Information and Statistics at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

The department was granted additional spending authority from the state Legislature for this fiscal year and has added temporary staff to help process the backlog of applications. Currently the department is requesting spending authority for fiscal year 2010-11 to add permanent staff to process the large volume of medical marijuana applications that continue to add to the backlog. If approved by the Legislature, the new staff could be added beginning in July.

Effective April 1, the Medical Marijuana Registry will implement the following procedures at the Vital Records service window at 4300 Cherry Creek Drive South:

1. Only sealed envelopes will be accepted. Documents that are not in a sealed envelope will be handed back to the applicant or shredded. Envelopes are not available on-site. If you need an envelope, please purchase one prior to arriving.

2. Receipts will not be available at the service window. If you need a receipt to provide proof of mailing to the Registry, please mail the envelope via certified or registered mail (or similar method) so that you receive a proof of delivery receipt from the Post Office.  Applicants are strongly encouraged to mail their application packets to the department at CDPHE Vital Records, 4300 Cherry Creek Dr. S., Denver, CO  80246.

3. Questions should be directed to the Medical Marijuana Registry information phone  number, 303-692-2184, or to the Medical Marijuana Registry information e-mail address, medical.marijuana@state.co.us. Staff will not be available at the Vital Records service window to address questions.

4. Packets received at the window will be processed along with the mail received for that date. Dropping off an application does NOT speed the delivery of the registration card.

5. Copying services are not available on-site. If you need a copy of the materials, please make these prior to arriving.

6. Notary services are not available on-site. If you need a signature notarized, please do so prior to arriving.
